At the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia – 22 November 2013 to 23 March 2014
… Hulbert’s work, which has its roots in the tradition of landscape photography, is focused on unique aspects of Australian landscape, identity and culture.
Recently Hulbert has explored the expression of a collective national identity through distinct and now-popular iconography that illustrates his fascination with the connections between place, history and culture. In Melbourne Now the artist is showing five photographs from his recent Import/Export series, 2011-2013, that celebrate the icons and myths that help define Australian identity. Featuring a combination of locations, personalities and ‘larrikin’ humour, the photographs consider ways in which foreign locations encapsulate the idea of Australia. The series also responds to the evolving assimilation of imported cultural icons and their relationship to contemporary Australia.
